[When Elena arrives, she doesn't take to the network right away. Instead, she spends time going through the Barge. She spends a little extra time in the gym, library and the enclosure, but otherwise can be found anywhere and everywhere on board. She's refamiliarizing herself with it, but she's also looking for any familiar faces. She doesn't want them to find out she's back through the network or by word of mouth. She wants to be the one to tell them in person.]

[Admittedly, she's a little nervous. She doesn't know how they'll react to her coming back. While logically she knows they definitely have grounds to be angry for her coming back, she still finds herself with her stomach in knots as she walks through the hallways trying to find people.]

[That doesn't mean, however, she doesn't have time to stop and chat with new faces either. Elena is actually pretty friendly. She approaches any faces she doesn't recognize with a smile, setting aside her worries about her return, and a:] Hey, I don't think we've had a chance to meet yet. I'm Elena.

[Elena gives a small wave to the camera after she turns it on. She's sitting at her desk with a mug of coffee beside her and her journal open. She hasn't started writing in it yet.]

So, I'm back. I've been back for a couple of hours, but I thought I'd go around and see people before talking on here. Sorry if I missed anyone. You guys are way too good at hiding.

For those of you that don't know me, I'm Elena. I used to be an inmate here, but I graduated.

[She hesitates to mention anything about being a vampire. There are definitely some new faces here and she's not entirely sure how they'll take it. But honesty is generally a good policy and she's not likely in any real danger anyway.]

Also for those of you who have come on board since then, I am a vampire. But I don't feed on people.

[There. She did it.]

I hope I get to know all of you. This place is definitely a lot easier if you've got friends.

Looks like I arrived just in time. Oddly enough, I don't mind writing this this year.

At the risk of her thinking it's really lame, I'd like for Abigail to have a nice journal so she can write or draw or do whatever she wants with it. I'd also like for her to have a ring. Nothing too fancy, just something simple. I'd also like for her to have a Polaroid camera with plenty of film to get her by for a while. Oh, and I want to get some things for her warden, Ben. Could you give him some books to read? I'm not sure what kind of novels he likes, but I'd say two or three he hasn't read that he will definitely like and then maybe one outside his usual choice.

For Dean, please give him vinyl copies of all his favorite classic rock albums and a player for it. I'd also like for him to have a vervain bracelet. And I'd like for him to have another bottle of Woodford this year. He might not want to necessarily share it, but hopefully he will again some day. And the same for Bond, wherever he is now. (Alcohol, not the music or bracelet, just so we're clear.) For Arkin, I would like for him to have a photo album of his family. I don't know if he still has that body pillow I asked for him last year, but if he doesn't give him another one. If he does, just make sure he gets a new fuzzy cover. Gotta keep up tradition.

For Cassel, get him a magic kit for kids and an EasyBake Oven. And for Chris get him a stack of comics he's missed out on while he's been on the Barge. For Jean can you get her a subscription to a psychology journal? And a piece of art she wouldn't mind hanging in her room or in her office. Give Mal a Keurig with plenty of K-cups in flavors she'll like to last her a year. Last, but not least, can you give Scott a buddy and some new lacrosse gear?

I hope I'm not forgetting anybody, but just in case? For everyone, make sure they get a mug with hot cocoa mix and marshmallows plus a candy cane. And don't be stingy with the ribbons tying the hot cocoa and marshmallow bags to the candy canes either.

And you know what? Give yourself some cookies. Merry Christmas and thank you.

[Here's a familiar, friendly face - Ben's expression is somewhat more obviously warm than he was once given to, but there's also a distinct, slightly bewildered undertone.]

Elena. Welcome back.

[Arkin certainly isn't angry to see Elena, but it does make him stop short and do a double take. Knowing the Barge, he does have to be sure it's really her. The one he knows, anyway. ]

Elena...?

[A bit of a smile trying to start. As soon as he sees recognition a full one comes in.]

[Despite the fact he's stringing together drunk binges like a daisy chain at this point, Dean notices fairly quickly that someone's moved in on the other side of him. It's that voice in the back of his head that never really shuts up, just becomes lost in all the static it has to get through to be heard sometimes; the one that knows how to survive and pays attention. His environment has changed. It might be more dangerous, now.

Really, after a certain point, danger just becomes redundant.

His vision might be slightly blurry when he stumbles out his door and nearly runs right over his new neighbor, but he still recognizes her after only a second. He scowls a second later.]

I know by now I really shouldn't be surprised, but joke's on me: are you fucking serious.

[It's the craziest thing. She just turns a corner in the library and Elena's there, like nothing ever happened. She stops in her tracks, slipping the book she was carrying back onto the shelf. It's a good day today, so she isn't angry. She isn't scared. It's just - she isn't sure if she's happy, either.]

Elena?

Holy shit. Elena. You just never fucking quit.

[More warm is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is a little surprising to see. They were never on any bad terms with one another (surprisingly given what a massively bad influence Elena was on Abigail at first), but they were also never all that close either.]

Hey Ben, thanks. [She smiles.] How are you?

Arkin!

[Elena rushes right over and throws her arms around his neck. It's a strong hug, but it's not her full strength. She tries to be careful about that around non-vampires.]

I've missed you so much.

[She lets go, taking a step back.]

How are you? You look good.

[Before Elena can say or do much of anything, she smells the alcohol on Dean, her nose wrinkling. With as strong as the scent is, she doesn't think she'd need super vampire senses to smell it on him. Which that all by itself is worrying. Dean was always a drinker, but it was always in moderation even as a coping mechanism. She can't think of a single time while she was on board that he ever smelled like a bar.]

[What worry follows suit, however, is the hostility she's greeted with once he seems to be able to get his vision to stop swimming long enough to focus on her face. She didn't exactly expect Dean to do backflips upon seeing her again, but this? This isn't wouldn't have ever crossed her mind not even with as much alcohol as he's clearly had recently. For a moment, she just stands there like a deer caught in headlights, stiff and with her mouth moving trying to form words that won't come out. Elena closes her eyes for a second, shaking her head and shifts her weight to one hip. She doesn't know where to start, so she just needs to dive in.]

You could at least let me explain before you get angry.

[Elena feels her breath get caught in her throat when she finds Abigail. Of all the people on the Barge, she had been looking for Abigail the most.]

[Her life didn't come a screeching halt without Abigail. Abigail wouldn't want that for her and Elena would be pretty mad at herself if that she allowed that to happen anyway. But she did miss Abigail. She missed her a lot. And there weren't exactly a whole lot of people she could talk to about it. Especially not with everything else that was happening in her life where she last left off.]

[Elena lets the breath go finally and smiles.]

Hey... Thought I'd find you here.

It's either my best or my worst trait depending on who you ask.

Oh my God, what Cassel said!

[Look how excited he is, it's like he's wagging a tail that isn't there.]

We didn't get to do that road trip!

It's nice to see you, too, Scott.

I hope you've been staying out of trouble.

Why in the hell would I do that?

[She was one of the ones that recognized him, of course, and furthermore she was one of the ones that seemed to think there was anything like a chance of him getting out of this. He'd been glad when she disappeared. By the rules of this place everyone seemed to think she'd gone back home, and that was one less person he had to worry about poking in where she didn't belong and was in over her head. If she hadn't gone home, there was nothing he could do about it anyway.

Now she's back, and she lives beside him. He definitely doesn't want to hear anything about any of that, and he doesn't want to know what anything he can see in her face means.]

I didn't care before, and I don't care now. This isn't me angry. This is me saying we'll do best if we just ignore each others' existence.

[Elena's confusion is plain on her face as she does nothing to conceal that from him. The hurt is also there although in muted tones as she does try to keep that more to herself. It's not from a lack of trust so much as she's trying not to jump the gun here. She knows she needs to put the pieces together first.]

[She looks away from his face for a moment, more towards the floor off to the side as she tries to understand. Slowly, her gaze meets his again.]

What are you talking about you didn't care before? We had a drink together the last time I was here.

[They had joked and talked about that impossible possibility of seeing each other again. That promise of always remaining family no matter how far apart they were. These aren't thinks she brings up now. Elena isn't sure how well-received they would be either the way he's acting.]

I graduated and... I left. You...you don't remember?

[Dean waits, if only because he needs to know how this is actually going to pan out. He can see how taken aback she is even if he doesn't care to see how deeply that goes towards upset: good. She's attached to the wrong man. The sooner she figures it out the better for both of them.

Her words don't make any sense to him either, though, and he pauses. His memory isn't as reliable as it once was, but they never drank together; he's certain of that if for no other reason than he doesn't willingly have a drink with anyone except Clementine. The last time he saw Elena they were arguing about nature versus nurture, and changing fate.

She had already graduated. The line of his mouth twists towards a frown, which becomes a growling reply.]

Wardens don't graduate. That's what I remember. You got it half right, though: you left.

If you don't eat people... what do you eat?

[How do tact.]

[Elena opens her mouth to protest. She was never a warden. She was only ever an inmate. And she had made the decision to go home, pick up the pieces of her life, and find a way to make things in her life right again. The only reason she's here is because not everything was within her power to make right. But before she starts talking, it clicks into place.]

I was here before, [she says, slowly.] But I don't remember it...

[Oh.]

[Elena draws a deep breath and lets out a shallow sigh.]

Which means you don't remember when I was an inmate. And you're not the same Dean.

[She looks down at the ground, not sure what she's feeling right now. Disappointed? Hurt? Confused? A little angry? It's all whirling around for her right now. Elena brushes some of her hair back behind her ear.]

Well, I feel like an idiot now. [She chances a glance back up at his face.] I'm sorry.

[Tact not needed. She doesn't even clarify that she doesn't eat people, she just drinks their blood.]

I drink the blood substitute here on the Barge. Back home, we have packets of blood that we get from the local hospital.

[And by "get," she means "steal." Anyone who catches them are compelled to forget and they're careful not to take too many that it'd raise suspicion with vampire hunters.]

[But really. "Get" captures all of that. Right? Right.]

[There had been some build up behind that revelation, is all. Cass had seen it, seen the way she put it out there and moved on, so it only seemed right to treat it as no big deal. Plus, vampires rank pretty low on the weird shit scale around these parts.

Good job barge, you ruin everything.]

Is it the same? Seems like it... would be less.

[Ruin or make better? That's the real question.]

[No, the answer is pretty obviously ruin.]

It's the same enough for it not to matter. It's not like tofurkey versus real turkey.

[Oh good, and now we're back to perplexitude.]

That's a real thing? To... furkey?

Just never go to a vegetarian's place for Thanksgiving. [A beat.] If Thanksgiving is a thing where you're from anyway. [Another pause before she adds once more,] Or vegetarianism.

That's the food one, right? Thanksgiving?

Yep. [She nods with a smile.] That'd be the one.

No fucking way.
