spam - racetrack.
[Elena wakes up early as she always does. She doesn't recognize the room she's in, but she has a vague sense that this is where she's supposed to be right now. So, she doesn't panic or start trying to find her parents or Jeremy. They'll come for her eventually, she's sure. And besides, Mommy always said that if she was ever lost to not panic. Instead, she just hops out of bed and starts looking for her diary. When she can't find it, she settles for an empty journal she finds after pawing around through the things in her room.]

[She lays on her bed, writing away for a while until she starts to get hungry for some breakfast. But before she heads to the mess hall, she's looking for Racetrack. The first place she thinks to look, is naturally Racetrack's room. She scampers off, barefoot and still in her PJs with her new diary and knocks impatiently and loudly on her door.]

Racetrack, wake up!

[Elena can be found all over the Barge. Usually she's sitting and keeping to herself with just her journal - even if she's decided to just plop down in a hallway - writing away and humming a made-up song. Sometimes she's drawing in her journal for parts of her stories because she's pretty certain she's going to write a lot of kid's books because she's such a great "drawerer" on top of being a writer. Sometimes she's just exploring and wandering - though still with her journal. She doesn't let it out of her sight ever and she won't let you hold it either. She's a little more wary of the adults than she is the other kids (you aren't supposed to talk to strangers, after all), but she still has a smile for everyone regardless.]

[Elena's holding the communicator upside down, but doesn't seem to realize or possibly care all that much.]

Would you like to read me one?

[Elena hesitates for a second before she nods. She pats the floor beside her because you have to sit for stories, okay. So get your prim and proper ass down here on the floor, Hannibal.]

[Gurl there is no way in hell.

He glances toward the closest common room, and cocks his head.]

I think we would be more comfortable in there. Don't you think so?

[Elena looks down the hall and nods. She gets to her feet with her journal and holds Hannibal's hand.]

[He even extends his hand to her as she rises, holds it carefully. Yes, he can work with this later.] Wonderful. What is your story about? [He sits at one end of the couch, unbuttoning his jacket as he sits.]

[Elena hops up, but sits on the edge so she can swing her feet a little.]

It's about a princess. A dragon kidnaps the prince she's supposed to marry.

Oh? Go on. You must tell me how it ends. [At least she's drawing outside the box.]

[The tl;dr version of Elena's little story is that the princess goes on an adventure to save the prince with her servant. They first visit a witch - because dragons are hard to kill - and she's a nice and pretty witch so she agrees to enchant the princess' sword so they can kill the dragon.]

[Then they run into some goblins and have to fight when they run across a nobleman who ends up getting his very nice clothes messed up. So at first he joins just to annoy the princess, but after a while he starts helping them solve problems along the way. It'd be the set-up for a love triangle if 7 years old knew what those were.]

[They end up facing off the dragon, kill it, and then the prince and princess live happily ever after THE END.]

[Hannibal listens quite politely, though seven-year-olds do not have the best flair for story telling. Still, he doesn't interrupt, and nods along here and there. When she finishes, he inclines his head and gives her a smile.]

That was a very good story, Elena. And very original. Most people stories see the princess in need of rescue.

I know and I think that's dumb. Girls can fight and be tough, too.

They most certainly can. Are you going to be tough?

[Elena hesitates.]

I don't know. I wanna be, but...

[Not the same thing. v_v]

What leaves you uncertain? I think you will be very strong.

What if I don't know how to be strong though? It's not like saying I want to be a writer when I grow up. I know how to do that. I just have to write and write and write and write and write.

But you can't do that to be strong, can you?

What do you think it means, to be strong?

[Elena looks down at her lap for a second to think.]

I think it means being brave. And doing what's right. And always helping people if you can.

[He thinks about telling her she won't be strong at all, but children don't have interesting reactions. She will cry, call him a liar, and run off. Very dull.]
