video - ces.

[Elena likes to spends her time surrounded by nature. She's been on the Barge for a while now, but the cold metals of most of the Barge is unsettling to her and she'd much rather spend time surrounded by green. So, she's taken herself to the CES. She still finds it so fascinating that it's able to create a fake world like this that seems so real without the assistance of magic, but she doesn't bother trying to pick it apart and instead simply enjoy what's there.]

[Elena has spread out a blanket and a few pillows where she is seated. She's brought food and drink with her as well. She's settled herself down beside a quiet brook in the middle of the woods. She feels right at home here. Elena is smiling when the communicator is turned on. She's using magic to hold it away from herself. It still feels strange being able to use it so openly, but you won't hear any complaints from her.]

If anyone should like to join me in the CES for a picnic, you are welcome to. I've brought enough to share.

((ooc: all responses will from from [personal profile] persanguinem. elena is a witch a la merlin. she was orphaned as a baby and raised by a noble family. she's since faked her death after she learned she could do magic to spare her family the shame.))

[He catches her eyes, lifts his hand to waggle his fingers. It's a simple band, silver, no inscription. It could easily be any ring from Tiffany's (because his taste is unquestionable), but he knows it was an engagement ring before it was a daylight ring. Vesper made it for him, not long before she killed herself.

Seeing in it catches on thoughts at the back of his mind, but his switch is carefully turned to off. He lets his hand drop again, and grins.]

What? We're not?

Now I am properly hurt.

[Elena sighs (a little exasperated), looking away from him. He's frustrating and tiring to deal with on a good day and it seems as though he might perhaps be eager to move into a bad day territory. Or maybe Elena is ready to get there already. It's hard to tell sometimes.]

[She looks at him again.]

What do you want? I can't imagine you'd actually want to spend time with me much less any time outdoors where there isn't that disgusting drink you indulge in.

That disgusting drink I favor makes up a little over five litres of your body.

[Bad days are always just around the corner. He gets so damned bored here.

His grin widens, teeth growing, eyes changing, veins darkening.]

A polite host would offer me a glass.

[Elena, like anyone, like any prey, is afraid when his face begins to change. But the difference between Elena and prey is that she isn't one to let that fear overtake her. She doesn't like using her magic to harm others much less does she like to make the first move, but with him? She's willing to make the exception. She'd rather not take her chances.]

[Elena's eyes flash gold as she raises the temperature in his brain - enough to nullify him as a threat and steady enough to keep him that way. Very calmly, she smooths a wrinkle in her dress. Although she's willing to make the exception, she takes no pleasure in causing him pain. On the contrary, it makes her just as uncomfortable as it would if she were attacking anyone, even a human. Despicable as he is, cruel and vindictive as he is, she knows that there had likely once been more to him. And here he was, reduced to a mere shadow of his former self.]

[She pities him almost as much as she reviles him.]

And a guest would not arrive unless he had been invited, James. So I suppose we both make for quite terrible company to the other. But out of the two of us, you could certainly stand to make more improvements on your manners than I.

Do you feel like making an effort?

[And there it is. He doesn't berate himself for the mistake: he wasn't really going to attack her, probably, maybe, it's her fault for attacking him first. Still, he cuts off a cry as he grasps his head, losing his balance and rolling off the picnic blanket. Great, now his suit will have grass stains all over it.]

Go to hell, [he growls, pushing himself up to his knees, trying to reach his feet. He wants to wring her neck, but with his powers dampened here, he'll never reach her in time.]

Sorry. [He tries to grin, but it's more a grimace.] Go to hell, my lady.

[Elena releases him from the pain. She can't lie to herself and say that there's something in his smugness even as he's rolling about in pain that makes her just want to cause him more harm, but she decidedly won't stoop to his level. No matter how easy it would be. No matter how easy he makes it to hate him.]

Save my spot there, won't you?

[He stands slowly as the heat ebbs, running a hand over his face. It's the fact that she does release him that has to do with why he doesn't flee while he can: what's the point? Death isn't death, it's an endless loop here and he just. doesn't. care.

Bending forward, then crouching, the smirk makes its way back to his face.]

Oh, come now. Don't tell me you're expecting hellfire. You don't strike me as the sort to wind up down there.

[Not that he believes in it. Not that he has ever believed in any of it.]

You strike me as weak.

Funny, I was about to say the opposite of you.

[Elena doesn't think of herself as any more or less restrained than anybody else with a moral compass. In fact, she's felt freer here on the Barge than she has in years back home.]

But then again, there really isn't much hope for you, is there? You'd rather just keep ramming into a wall than perhaps try to change direction and look for something better for yourself.

[He laughs outright, balancing on his toes, hands on his knees. He actually lifts his head and barks that laugh up, as if he's addressing nature, as if to ask, can you believe this?

When he looks back at her, he's still smiling, but it's not in his eyes.]

I'm on a prison ship in space where nothing can really hurt me.

[His smile widens, teeth flashing. Even the pain she causes - or maybe especially - is fleeting.] What could be better?

Living.

[She says it simply and offers no explanation.]

[Elena can't pretend to like him as she can for others. But she can't pretend as though she isn't aware on some small level what he masks behind that arrogance and cruelty. People aren't simply born that way, they're made. She doesn't know what made him, but she knows there was likely something better once.]

[His brow comes together and he stands to look down at her. He doesn't miss Vesper. He doesn't grieve her. But there is a strange kind of pressure in his chest, when he thinks about her choosing to die.

It makes him antsy, and he snorts.]

It's not pretending. I just don't care anymore. Shame you can't see what I'm talking about.

[He cocks his head to the side, and holds out his wrist.]

Unless you'd like to.
